What goes into a fence build like this
Locates and layout first
Before any post goes in, utility locates are called and the line is laid out. Property lines matter here — a fence built in the wrong place is an expensive conversation with a neighbour and sometimes a legal one.
Posts set below frost
Posts are set in concrete footings below the frost line. This is the difference between a fence that stands straight for decades and one that starts leaning after three winters. Frost heave on shallow posts is the most common cause of fence failure in this climate.
Panels, gates and the finish line
Boards are run to a consistent line and spacing, following grade where the ground moves. Gates get extra attention — they carry weight, swing repeatedly, and are the part of a fence that fails first if hardware and post depth aren't right.
What drives the cost and timeline
Every property is different, which is why we quote after seeing the site rather than from a price list. These are the things that move the number most on this kind of work.
- Linear footage and the height of the fence
- Material — pressure-treated, cedar, vinyl and chain link vary widely
- How many gates, and whether any are double or wide enough for vehicles
- Ground conditions — rock, roots and slope all slow post setting
- Slope, which decides whether panels step down or follow the grade
- Removal and disposal of an existing fence, if there is one
Questions we get asked
Do I need a permit?
It depends on your municipality and the height. Centre Wellington and neighbouring townships each have their own fence by-laws, and pool enclosures have separate requirements. We'll tell you what applies before we start.
How close to the property line can it go?
That's set by local by-law, and shared fences have their own rules about cost-sharing with a neighbour. If the line isn't clearly established, a survey is worth doing first — moving a built fence is far more expensive than locating the line.
How long does a wood fence last?
A properly built pressure-treated or cedar fence lasts a long time with occasional staining. Posts are what usually fail first, which is why footing depth matters more than the boards.
