Working in Fergus

What Fergus properties actually need.

Fergus is home. We live and work here, our material suppliers are minutes away, and most of our projects are close enough that we can swing by a site the same day you call. That proximity shows up in small ways that matter on a job: we're not rushing off to beat traffic, and if a load of stone or soil needs topping up, it's a short trip rather than a lost afternoon.

The town's housing stock covers a lot of ground. The limestone streets around downtown and the Grand River come with mature trees, tight rear-yard access and grading that was set long before anyone thought about where runoff would end up. The newer subdivisions on the edges of town have the opposite problem — flat lots, thin builder topsoil over compacted fill, and back yards that have never been finished. We work on both, and they call for genuinely different approaches.

On the Ground

What we plan for in Fergus.

Grand River limestone

Bedrock sits close to the surface through much of Fergus, particularly near the river. It shapes how deep we can excavate and where footings and drainage runs are practical — worth knowing before a design is finalised rather than after.

New-build back yards

Subdivision lots are typically handed over as rough-graded clay with a thin skim of topsoil. Sod laid straight onto that struggles. We correct the grade and build up proper soil depth first.

Mature trees downtown

Older properties come with established root systems that dictate where a patio or deck footing can actually go. We work around roots rather than through them, which keeps the tree — and your hardscaping — intact.

Good to Know

Fergus questions, answered.

Have a question we haven’t covered? Ask during your free on-site estimate — or give us a call.

Yes — Fergus is our home base, not a service area we drive out to. That means shorter lead times for site visits, and we're nearby if you need us after a project wraps up.

Usually, yes. Ontario's Building Code generally requires a permit once a deck sits more than about 600 mm above grade, and Centre Wellington applies its own requirements on top of that. We confirm what's needed with the local building department before the build, and our footings go below the frost line either way.

Centre Wellington sets fence heights by by-law, and the limits differ between rear yards, side yards and anything facing the street — pool enclosures are governed separately again. We confirm the current by-law for your property before we quote, so the fence you approve is the fence that can actually be built.

Yes. Ontario law requires a locate before anyone digs, so we submit an Ontario One Call request and wait for the utility locates to come back before excavation starts. It costs you nothing and it's not a step we skip.
