Here are the before and afters from a full garden bed cleanup…
The existing beds had become heavily overgrown with weeds, perennials and unwanted vegetation, so we removed everything throughout the designated areas, dug out root systems where needed, and cleared out all of the debris. Once everything was removed, we raked and graded the beds clean and re-established the shape of the space. We also created a defined edge along the entire border of the garden bed to give it a cleaner, more premium finished look and a clear separation from the surrounding lawn. Altogether, we cleaned up approximately 256 sq. ft. of garden bed area. The goal here was to completely reset the space and leave the homeowner with a clean foundation for whatever they decide to do next, whether that’s new plantings, mulch or future lawn restoration. A huge difference from where it started, and the front of the property already feels much cleaner, more open and more intentional.

The homeowner needed a proper 12’ x 6’ foundation prepared for a new 10’ x 5’ steel utility shed. We started by laying out the full area, removing the existing sod and excavating down to the required depth so the finished pad would sit properly within the yard. From there, we installed and compacted approximately 1.5 yards of Granular A to create a solid structural base, followed by a thin HPB bedding layer for final grading and levelling. The surface was finished with eighteen 24” x 24” concrete patio slabs, with each stone individually set and checked to make sure the finished pad was level and consistent. The end result is a clean, stable shed foundation that’s ready for installation and built to hold up properly over time. A simple project, but one where proper prep makes all the difference.

This property needed some extra attention after a major construction project left the existing ground heavily compacted and in need of restoration. We loosened and regraded the area, addressed the contours and drainage, brought in fresh topsoil, and installed new sod while carefully tying everything into the existing lawn. In fact, fall is one of the best times to install new sod in Ontario. Cooler temperatures mean less heat stress, moisture is easier to manage, and your new lawn has an opportunity to begin establishing before winter. At HB Landscaping, we handle the full process from removing and preparing the existing area to grading with fresh topsoil where needed and professionally installing the new sod for a clean transition and finished lawn. Here are the before and afters from a small front garden bed…
The existing garden bed didn’t have much definition, so we installed a new raised stone border around the front and both sides to give the area a cleaner, more finished look. The new border runs approximately 19 linear feet in total and sits about 6 inches high. We excavated and prepared the base using HPB, making sure the first course was properly set and partially buried for stability. From there, each course was installed level and square, and we used PL construction adhesive between the stones to help lock everything together and keep the wall solid over time. We also backfilled behind the wall with gravel to help with proper drainage, then added soil over top to finish the garden bed off cleanly. We made sure the corners were tight, the front run stayed perfectly straight, and the entire wall remained level throughout the installation. A simple upgrade, but it made a big difference in how finished and defined the front of the home looks.

This approximately 360 SQFT section had been used as a construction area during previous work at the property, leaving the existing lawn damaged and the ground needing some cleanup before new sod could be installed. We started with some light removal throughout the area, cleaned up the remaining debris and vegetation, and then brought in approximately 1 yard of screened topsoil to regrade the section and create a smooth, even base that tied properly into the surrounding lawn. Once the prep work was complete, we installed approximately 360 SQFT of fresh Kentucky Bluegrass sod and carefully patched everything into the existing yard. Extra attention was given to the transitions and edges so there weren’t any harsh lines between the old and new grass. Once everything has had time to root in and grow together, the repaired section should blend seamlessly with the rest of the lawn.

This area was originally grass, but previous contractors working at the property had been using it to store materials, which left the lawn heavily damaged, compacted and full of weeds by the time the work was finished. We started by removing the weeds, unwanted vegetation and damaged sections of lawn throughout the area. From there, we brought in approximately 3.5 yards of screened topsoil to regrade the section, smooth everything out and create a proper base for the new sod. We also made sure to create a clean, defined edge where the existing lawn meets the new sod. This helps give the installation a much cleaner finish right away and allows the old and new grass to eventually grow together for a more seamless transition. Once the grading and prep work was complete, we installed approximately 1,200 SQFT of fresh Kentucky Bluegrass sod throughout the restored area and rolled everything to ensure proper soil-to-sod contact. A pretty major improvement from where this section started, and a good example of how a damaged lawn can be properly restored after construction work.

This gazebo was installed on top of a deck we had previously designed and built, allowing us to create a much more functional and comfortable outdoor living space for the homeowners. The gazebo was carefully laid out and secured to the existing deck structure, with extra attention given to positioning, alignment, and ensuring the posts were properly supported and anchored. The finished structure now provides a large covered seating area with protection from the sun and weather, while still keeping the backyard feeling open and spacious. This was the final addition to the deck project and completely transformed the space into a finished outdoor entertaining area that can be enjoyed throughout the season!

The front garden bed had become heavily overgrown, so we removed the existing plants, weeds and large shrub, dug out the root systems, and cleared the entire area to prepare it for new lawn. Once everything was removed, we added a fresh layer of topsoil, graded the area to match the surrounding lawn, and installed approximately 372 SQFT of Kentucky Bluegrass sod. The newly installed sod was then rolled to ensure proper soil-to-sod contact and give the lawn the best possible start. We also completely cleaned out approximately 315 SQFT of garden beds along the side of the property. This included removing dense groundcover, weeds, grasses, unwanted vegetation, loose organic material and accessible root systems throughout the beds. After the vegetation was removed, the beds were cleaned up and reshaped, then finished with fresh soil and landscape fabric to help suppress future weed growth and give the homeowner a clean, low-maintenance base to work from. A pretty major transformation from where this property started, and a much cleaner look around the entire home.

This backyard had been heavily damaged by grubs, so we removed approximately 560 SQFT of the affected lawn and treated the exposed area generously with grub killer before installing fresh topsoil and new sod. Treating the area underneath the new soil gave us the best opportunity to combat the existing grub problem before establishing the new lawn. We also repaired several smaller damaged patches throughout the other half of the backyard using additional sod to help restore the lawn as a whole. On the newly sodded side, we carefully graded the installation area to match the exact level of the pre-existing lawn. This way, once the new sod roots in and begins growing, the transition between the new and existing grass will be as seamless as possible. The installation was finished by rolling the entire newly sodded area to ensure proper soil-to-sod contact and give the lawn the best possible start.

This project completely transformed an underutilized section of the backyard into a clean, functional outdoor living space that the homeowner can enjoy for years to come. We began by removing the existing patio stones and preparing the area for the new 10’ x 16’ deck. The foundation work included excavating the required footing holes and installing sonotubes to support the new structure. Since the bottom of the deck sits at ground level, we also excavated the entire footprint and installed approximately 4 inches of clear gravel underneath the deck to improve drainage and help keep moisture away from the framing. From there, we framed the entire structure from the ground up using pressure-treated lumber. The framing incorporated extensive blocking, reinforced structural sections, joist protection, and all required connections to create a strong and durable foundation for the finished deck. One of the more involved aspects of this project was creating a new transition from the rear sliding door to the main deck. We constructed a custom three-step box-framed staircase with an upper landing, integrating the entire assembly into the reinforced main-deck framing. New pressure-treated guardrails and handrails were then constructed to complete the entrance and provide a safe, comfortable transition into the backyard. The main deck was finished with pressure-treated decking and a picture-framed perimeter with mitred corners, giving the otherwise simple design a clean and intentional finish while maximizing the usable space within the yard. This project was fully permitted through the Township of Centre Wellington and successfully passed every required inspection, including footings, framing, and final inspection. The end result is a completely new 160 sq. ft. outdoor living space that replaces the previous patio area and significantly improves the functionality and appearance of the backyard. From the foundation and structural framing underneath to the final details above, every stage was completed with long-term durability, and quality craftsmanship in mind.

This project involved extensive site preparation, including major grading, stump removal and the removal of several small trees to open up the property and create a properly prepared foundation. We then installed two new garden beds using a combined 6 yards of triple mix, along with a framed gravel seating area built with pressure-treated 4x4 lumber. Pressure-treated posts were also installed around the gravel area so the homeowners can add a privacy fence in the future without having to disturb the finished landscape. To complete the transformation, we prepared the lawn area and installed approximately 1,300 sq. ft. of fresh sod, creating a clean, lush and functional backyard for the homeowners to enjoy. From there, we installed approximately 1,300 sq. ft. of premium Kentucky bluegrass sod, giving the homeowners a lush, healthy lawn that instantly transformed the space. To define the landscape, we built two new garden beds, incorporating 6 cubic yards of premium triple mix soil to provide the ideal growing environment for future plantings. We also constructed a decorative gravel lounge area, framed with pressure-treated 4x4 lumber for a clean, modern finish. Integrated into the design are pressure-treated fence posts, allowing the homeowners to seamlessly install a future privacy fence without disturbing the completed landscape. The end result is a backyard that is not only visually striking but also thoughtfully designed for future expansion, entertaining, and long-term durability. From rough grade to finished landscape, every detail was completed with quality craftsmanship and attention to detail.

For this project, we transformed an open driveway entrance by constructing a custom 6-foot premium horizontal privacy fence with a matching 3-foot pedestrian gate, complete with a clean picture-framed finish. The installation began by saw-cutting the existing asphalt driveway, excavating to approximately frost depth, and installing new 6×6 pressure-treated posts in concrete footings to provide a strong, long-lasting foundation. We then custom-built the fence and gate on site using premium pressure-treated lumber, reinforced framing, and heavy-duty hardware to create a durable, modern entrance that will stand the test of time. We began by removing the unwanted vegetation using a skid steer, then we redistributed the existing soil and fill the deeper holes. Once the rough grade was established, we installed 10 cubic yards of fresh topsoil, creating a smooth, nutrient-rich base for the homeowners to overseed and establish a new lawn. We began by removing all weeds and clearing away the old mulch before installing fresh garden soil to create a healthy growing environment. To help minimize future weed growth, we installed professional-grade landscape fabric before applying a fresh layer of mulch. We also carefully divided and reorganized the existing hostas to create a more balanced layout and finished the refresh by planting new white hydrangeas, adding a bright focal point and long-lasting seasonal colour. The result is a clean, low-maintenance landscape that enhances the home’s curb appeal while giving the garden beds a fresh new look. For this project, we installed 700 sq ft of fresh sod, added 13 linear feet of weeping tile, and finished it off with a stepping stone installation on both sides of the concrete patio. The weeping tile was installed to carry water from the downspout underground, helping prevent water from pooling on the new sod when runoff drains from the pergola roof. Functional upgrades like this make a big difference in protecting the new lawn and improving overall drainage. A clean finish, better drainage, and a more polished backyard layout.
