New sod: your first-month FAQ

How often should I water new sod?

For the first two weeks, keep the sod consistently moist — usually a good soak once or twice a day depending on heat. The goal is for water to reach the soil beneath the sod, not just the blades. After it roots in (gently tug a corner — resistance means it's taking), you can taper to deeper, less frequent watering.

When can I walk on it or let the dog out?

Keep foot traffic (and pets) off new sod for about two weeks while the roots establish. Early traffic creates gaps and uneven spots that are hard to undo.

When's the first mow?

Wait until the sod is rooted and has grown to roughly 8–9 cm, usually 2–3 weeks in. Mow on a high setting, make sure the blade is sharp, and never remove more than a third of the height at once.
