What goes into an interlock build like this
Excavation and base, not just pavers
The visible stone is the last ten percent of an interlock job. Below it sits an excavated and compacted granular base — the depth depends on whether it's a walkway or a driveway and on what the existing soil is like. That base is what stops the surface heaving through freeze-thaw.
Compaction in lifts
Base material is compacted in layers rather than dumped and rolled once. Skipping this is the single most common reason interlock settles unevenly a few winters after it's laid, and it's invisible until it fails.
Edge restraint and jointing
Pavers move outward under load unless they're restrained at the perimeter. Edge restraint holds the field tight, and polymeric sand in the joints locks the surface together while resisting weeds and washout.
What drives the cost and timeline
Every property is different, which is why we quote after seeing the site rather than from a price list. These are the things that move the number most on this kind of work.
- Square footage and the complexity of the shape — curves and circles mean more cutting
- Excavation depth, which is driven by soil type and whether it carries foot or vehicle traffic
- How far excavated material has to be moved, and whether a machine can reach the area
- Paver choice — dimensional stone, tumbled, or large-format all lay at different rates
- Steps, seat walls, retaining elements or lighting built into the design
- Existing surfaces that need removing and disposing of first
Questions we get asked
Will it settle or heave over winter?
A properly built base is specifically designed to prevent that — it's why the excavation depth and compaction matter more than the pavers. Where interlock does heave, it's almost always because the base was too shallow, poorly compacted, or laid over ground that holds water.
How much maintenance does it need?
Very little. Sweep it, rinse it occasionally, and top up joint sand every few years. Sealing is optional and mostly cosmetic — it deepens the colour and makes spills easier to clean.
Can you match existing pavers?
Sometimes. Manufacturers discontinue lines and colours weather over time, so an exact match isn't always possible. Where it isn't, a deliberate contrast usually looks better than a near-miss.
