Interlock patios in Kitchener
A large share of the interlock work we're asked about in Kitchener isn't new — it's twenty-plus years old and starting to go. Pavers settling in one corner, joints opening, a trip edge appearing where there wasn't one.
That's almost never the pavers' fault. Interlock laid in the 1990s and 2000s frequently went down on a base that was too shallow for our freeze-thaw cycles, and it holds up until it doesn't.
Why Kitchener patios fail, and what fixes them
Undersized original base
The most common failure we see locally is an original base built too shallow or compacted in a single pass. It performs for years, then freeze-thaw finds the weakness and the surface starts moving. Relaying the same pavers on a correct base is often the right answer — the stone itself is usually fine.
Rough-graded subdivision yards
In the newer south and west, builder handover grade sheds water toward wherever was convenient for the builder. Putting a patio in without correcting that just puts an expensive surface in the path of the water.
Established trees near the build
Older Kitchener streets have mature canopy and surface roots. Excavating through major roots damages the tree and the tree eventually damages the patio. Where roots are significant, the layout works around them.

- Assess whether existing pavers are reusable — often they are, which changes the cost significantly
- Lift and set aside anything being reused, and remove the failed base
- Re-excavate to a depth that suits our freeze-thaw cycles rather than the original spec
- Rebuild granular base, compacting in lifts
- Correct surface drainage so water leaves the patio rather than sitting on it
- Relay, cut, edge-restrain and lock the joints with polymeric sand
Questions from Kitchener homeowners
My patio has settled. Do I need all new pavers?
Usually not. Concrete pavers are durable and the failure is almost always underneath them. If the stone is sound we lift it, rebuild the base properly, and relay it — which costs considerably less than starting over.
Why did the original base fail?
Most often it was too shallow for our climate, or compacted in one pass instead of in lifts. Both perform acceptably for years, then start moving once enough freeze-thaw cycles have worked on them.
Can you match my existing pavers if some are broken?
Sometimes. Manufacturers discontinue lines and colours weather, so an exact match isn't always available. Where it isn't, a deliberate border or contrasting inlay reads far better than a near-miss.
