Stepping versus racking
Stepped panels stay level and drop at each post, which suits formal styles and steeper ground — but it leaves triangular gaps at the bottom. Racked panels follow the slope with no gaps, which suits board fences and gentler grades. The slope and the style decide which.
Gaps under a stepped fence
On a step, the ground falls away beneath each panel. If the fence is containing a dog or a pool, those gaps matter and need filling — with a kicker board, grading, or a stone infill.
Where the older streets constrain the line
In West Galt and the century-home areas, existing stone walls, mature planting and established grade all constrain where a fence can run. New work fits around them rather than clearing them.

Questions from Cambridge homeowners
Should my fence step down the slope or follow it?
Depends on the fence and the fall. Steeper ground and formal panel styles suit stepping; gentler slopes and board fences suit racking. We'll show you what each looks like on your line before deciding.
Won't a stepped fence leave gaps at the bottom?
It does, by design. On a steeper slope those gaps can be significant. If you're containing a dog or meeting pool-enclosure rules they need addressing — a kicker board, regrading, or stone infill all work.
Do pool fences have different rules?
Yes, and they're stricter — height, gaps and self-closing, self-latching gates are all specified. Cambridge has its own pool enclosure by-law and we build to it.
