Sod installation in Kitchener
Kitchener splits neatly into two kinds of sod job, and they need opposite things.
In the established neighbourhoods — Stanley Park, Forest Heights, Idlewood — the problem is shade. Decades of tree canopy means lawns thin out no matter how carefully they're watered. In the newer south and west, Huron Park and Rosenberg, the problem is that the builder handed over a rough-graded lot and called it finished.

Grass needs light, and a lot of Kitchener's older streets don't have much at ground level. Sod laid under heavy shade will look good for a season and then thin. Where there's enough light we use a shade-tolerant approach; where there genuinely isn't, we'd rather tell you a bed or a ground cover will look better in three years than pretend sod will.
Subdivision handover grading
New-build lots in the south and west are typically handed over rough-graded, with just enough topsoil to pass. That's not a base for a lawn. Getting soil depth and fall right before sod goes down is the whole job — the sod itself is the easy part.
Surface roots near old trees
Established maples and Norway maples put roots right at the surface. You can't bury them under fresh soil without damaging the tree, so around them the sensible answer is to work with what's there rather than fight it.

- Assess light levels honestly — this decides whether sod is the right answer at all in shaded sections
- Strip existing turf or debris and remove it from site
- Correct the grade, particularly on subdivision lots where the builder's rough grade sheds water the wrong way
- Loosen compacted subsoil and bring soil depth up to where roots can work
- Lay fresh sod with tight, staggered seams
- Water in fully before leaving, and hand over the four-week aftercare schedule

Will sod grow in my shaded Kitchener back yard?
It depends how much light actually reaches the ground. A few hours of dappled sun is workable with the right blend. Deep shade under a mature canopy is not, and we'll say so rather than sell you a lawn that thins out by year two.
The builder left my lot rough-graded. Is that enough to sod over?
Almost never. Builder rough grade is done for drainage approval, not for a lawn, and the topsoil layer is usually minimal. Correcting it first is what makes the difference between a lawn that lasts and one you replace.
