Sod installation in Guelph

What Guelph ground does to a new lawn
Compacted clay under the south end
Subdivision back yards across Guelph's south end are typically heavy clay compacted by construction traffic, with a thin builder's layer of topsoil over it. Roots can't get into compacted clay and water can't get through it, so sod laid straight onto that base roots badly and then sits wet. Loosening the subsoil and building real soil depth is the difference between a lawn and a very expensive green carpet.
Drumlin slope you don't notice standing still
Guelph is built across rolling drumlin terrain, so a lot of lots carry more fall than they look like they do. That's fine — grass doesn't mind a slope — but it decides where water ends up. Getting the grade right while the ground is open is the cheapest it will ever be.

- Walk the property and check where water goes — on south-end lots this often changes the scope before anything else is decided
- Strip the existing surface and haul it away
- Break up compacted subsoil so roots have somewhere to go
- Reshape the grade so water runs away from the house, not toward it
- Bring in and level topsoil to a depth that will actually support a lawn
- Lay fresh sod tight, staggered, and water it in before we leave

Do you install sod in Guelph year-round?
From when the ground thaws in spring until it freezes in late fall — often into November. Early fall is the strongest window in Guelph: the soil is still warm, the air has cooled, and autumn rain does much of the watering for you.
My south-end back yard holds water. Can you just sod over it?
We can, but we'd be taking your money for a lawn that dies in the spring thaw. Standing water over sod kills it. On those lots the honest sequence is to fix the grade or put in drainage first, then lay the lawn — usually in the same visit.
How much topsoil does a Guelph subdivision lot need?
More than the builder left, almost always. We assess it on site rather than quoting a number blind, because the depth already there varies street to street.
